Posture and Gait Retraining

Postural education and movement retraining are integral to your successful rehabilitation.   Chronic injuries are often the result of faulty postural habits and poor functional movement patterns.  Whether your pain occurs when walking, reaching up to the top shelf in your closet, or playing golf, your physical therapist is prepared to look at the entire kinetic chain of joints and surrounding systems that may be contributing to your pain. We are committed to helping you understand how to optimize your movements so that you can return to all the activities in your life.

For example, walking is a necessary functional movement pattern.   Healthy joint mechanics requires the foot to flatten out  (pronate) as we bear weight through it so we effectively absorb shock.  And then recoil (supinate) as we push off and propel our bodies forward in space efficiently.  Many of our patients with lower extremity injuries need to “re-learn” how to walk during their rehabilitation.  Your physical therapist will analyze your biomechanics to determine how they may be contributing to your injury and teach you your best neutral gait in a language that you will understand.

Andersonville Physical Therapy is here to help you recover from surgery, pain or loss of function and improve your posture and your gait.  Find out how we can help you by calling our Chicago office at (773) 907-3599 today.
